Stratosleds Over Mars City |

ABOUT THE KIT |
The success of Universal's 1936 serial "Flash Gordon" led to two sequels, the first of which was "Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars" in 1938. Produced for just a third of what the first serial cost ($250,000 vs. the original's $750,000), "Mars" featured a variety of new vehicles, including this atmospheric "Stratosled" used for both transportation and combat. Resembling a flying flat-iron, the design was decidedly toy-like in appearance and, although clearly a Deco-era design, it lacked the elegance and detail of the original rocket ships. |
This all-resin kit was yet another of Herb Deek's tributes to the classic sci-fi designs of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. It could be considered a "multi-media kit" in that it came with a set of metal staples one used to create the "rungs" beneath the ship's access hatch. The model was built from an original issue. |
