1940s
World War II and its
aftermath put a significant damper on popular science fiction. While the Great Depression of the 1930s had created a nationwide demand
for escapism, the War turned the public's mood deadly serious as freedom
itself fought for survival against the forces of global tyranny. With millions dying overseas, this was little time to think about
rockets-to-the-moon.
However, in the post-War years, a few imaginative vehicular designs managed to sneak their way into the public's consciousness. A few examples are displayed here. |
