ABOUT THE DESIGN

ABOUT THE KIT

The XV-2 "Orbit Jet" was the technological centerpiece of the short-lived syndicated TV series, "Rocky Jones - Space Ranger."  Unlike most of the other "outer space" shows produced during this era ("Captain Video," "Tom Corbet - Space Cadet," etc.) , "Rocky Jones" was filmed, not aired live, hence its 39 episodes enjoyed a longer-than-normal life in reruns.

The Orbit Jet itself is another winged-V2-like tail-sitter, although its sleek, almost organic lines and elongated needle-nose help distinguish it from other rocket ships of the era.

This early release from Lunar Models was, like many of the company's kits from that era, somewhat crude and inaccurate.  The engine was unfinished (Fixed somewhat by this modeler), there were no landing pads (Common thumtacks worked surprisingly well!), no decals were supplied (Praise ink jet printers!) and the black cockpit "window" didn't even exist in the original miniature.  On the plus side, the textured "lunar landscape" base was nicely done and, with some work, the kit nonetheless built up into a handsome display piece that captured the graceful lines of the original ship.

This model was built from an original issue.
