Attached see photos of my recent "BoMi" build. Two photos were taken
with an IPhone, the others with my Nikon, so the resolution varies
between them.
I decided to panel the second stage vs. making it one overall color. I
used seven different metallic shades, Tamiya AS-12 as an overall coat,
then Testors Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Magnesium, Titanium, Gunmetal
and Dark Anodic Gray Metalizers in pre-planned locations I diagrammed
ahead of time. I also drilled out and added aluminum rocket exhaust
tubes, and a cone-shaped fairing over the bomb release port at the rear
of the third stage. Since the USAF aircraft of the 1950s had markings
that were big and bold (I liken it to "In your face, here we come!"),
I used larger stars and bars insignia than were included with the kit and made white USAF and Air Force decals to stand out on the blue first stage. I added aftermarket warning stencils in various locations on each stage and made up a Bell Aircraft logo decal that I placed on both sides at the front of the piloted first and third stages. I also placed the main landing gear doors in a more conventional position on the outboard side of the gear struts vs. inboard as indicated in the instruction photos. The model won a third place award in the vacuform and resin aircraft category at a recent North Jersey model show. All in all, this is a great kit of an obscure but interesting subject. |
