Model Info: Convair Manned Observational Satellite Vehicle,1/200 scale, 1997 Glencoe reissue of 1958 Strombecker kit.

Finished as if constructed in orbit from tanks and fuselages of spent rockets, with scratch-made decals to more closely resemble the launch vehicles of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s.

This model was made from the Glencoe reissue and was a very tough build.  There seemed to be one problem after another.  The kit parts were loaded with thick flash and every seam had to be filled and sanded.  I needed to buy a second kit as the first was missing the two, four-spoked “Y”-shaped sections that join the center assembly.  Although both kits were factory sealed, the first kit’s decals were mostly too brittle to be used and the second kit had mispackaged decals that belonged to a completely different model.

With the extra parts, I decided to add four additional center compartments, plus portholes and Convair logos.  Then to add more interest, I assumed this vehicle was nuclear powered and fitted an articulated arm with a separate container for the pick up and exchange of fresh and spent nuclear fuel by service ships. I like the result but I don’t think I’d do it again.
