The
Scout/Destroyer vessel first appeared in the original Star Fleet
Technical Manual (Franz Joseph Designs © 1975). The design took
elements of the original U.S.S. Enterprise and re-configured them
into a series of ships, including a space tug and a dreadnought, which
expanded Star Fleet’s repertoire.
Permission to use the design was acquired by Task Force Games and
incorporated into their tabletop battle simulation game Star Fleet
Battles (Amarillo Design Bureau © 1979). Game Science produced
1:3788 scale models of these ships to use as game pieces, along with both
familiar and conjectural models of ships from other species.
This model was constructed from parts from an original issue AMT
Enterprise kit, purchased around 1973, during the resurgence of
Star Trek in syndication. The original Enterprise model was
severely damaged in the early 80’s, but the wreckage was retained,
anticipating refurbishment. After the Enterprise was replaced in
this collection by a re-issued kit, this Scout vessel was assembled. The
only non-AMT parts are the deflector dish pylon (a game piece from
Sorry) and the decals. This vessel was christened U.S.S.
Crockett NCC-600 (from Franz Joseph’s original roster) in honor of the
present home of this collection.
In lieu of box art, I’ve included a copy from the Technical Manual
showing the original design.
