On October 4, 2004, experimental
aircraft entrepreneur Burt Ruttan, in partnership with Microsoft co-founder
Paul Allenm claimed the $10 million Ansari X-Prize by successfully launching
the first civilian spacecraft. Piloted by Mike Melvill, the Scaled
Composites SpaceShip One was carried aloft from its Mojave Desert launch
site aboard the jet powered "White Knight" carrier. At approximately
47,000 feet, the rocket-powered SpaceShip One was released. Now under
its own power, the craft soared to approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles),
which is the widely recognized "edge of space."
To win the X-Prize, SpaceShip One had to fly into space twice within 14 days -- a feat it easily accomplished. Although built specifically for the X-Prize competition, SpaceShip One was the forerunner of what is hoped to be an ever-expanding field of privately owned and operated sub-orbital and orbital spacecraft. |
