What the X-Wing is to "Star
Wars" and the Viper is to "Battlestar Galactica," the SA-23E "Starfury"
is to "Babylon 5." A one-man light fighter designed for
purely deep-space flight, the craft was designed by Steve Burg and Ron
Thornton to function as a front-line interceptor in the service of the
Earth Alliance "Earthforce." Unlike its TV predecessors, the
Starfury's performance tends to actually adhere to zero-G physics, its
maneuvers dependent on the judicious firing of its wing-based thrusters,
not on standard aeronautics. Another big difference: Its
pilots work from a standing, not sitting position, which is unique in TV
sci-fi. The Starfury's design was reportedly a subtle homage to the "Last Starfighter" Gunstar, which had been designed by the creator's friend, Ron Cobb. |
