ABOUT THE DESIGN: | ABOUT THE MODEL: | |
Although this heavy fighter design looked like it had two engines mounted in conventional nacelles, this was not the case. The engines were to be mounted in the wind root junction with the fuselage, and the propellers were to be driven by a shaft. The idea was that, in case one engine failed, the other could be used to drive both propellers, albeit it at half speed. The configuration also allowed for a sleeker design, hence less drag. The Ar.E561 never progressed beyond the design stage, probably due to the complex engine and gearing arrangement. |
