Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV)
from "The Martian" (2015)
About the Design
The Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) is a two-stage chemical rocket-powered spacecraft designed to ferry American astronauts from the Martian surface to their orbiting mothership.
Based on contemporary NASA concepts, the MAV featured in Ridley Scott's "The Martian" (2015) was designed to land autonomously months ahead of the mission astronauts, who would arrive later in a separate landing vehicle. The MAV consisted of a descent stage that would serve as a launching platform for the single-stage ascent module designed to carry the crew back into space upon completion of their mission.
About the Kit
Released by Fantastic Plastic Models in October 2017, the 1:144 MAV kit was designed in CAD by Scott Lowther and cast by Ravenstar Studios. The JBOT decals featured markings for both the Ares III and Ares IV missions. The kit was designed with a removable nosecone so builders could recreate the "Watney Convertible" version featured in the climax of the 2015 film.
Original box art was by Brad Fraunfelter.
