ABOUT THE DESIGN

ABOUT THE KIT

Based on the 1960s CBS television series, 1998's LOST IN SPACE: The Movie once again treated us to the travels and travails of the space-faring Robinson family as they struggled vainly to find their way home from the deepest regions of the Milky Way galaxy.  Originally sent into the cosmos to find a suitable planet to which humans could emigrate from a dying Earth, the Robinsons' spacecraft was -- in the movie version -- a two-stage system.  Stage Two was, of course, the famous "Jupiter Two" in which the Robinsons bounced from planet to planet.  But to escape Earth's gravitational pull, the J2 was launched spaceward by a rocket-powered "shell" -- the Jupiter One -- whose saucer-shaped design bore an uncanny -- and no doubt intentional -- resemblance to the J2 in the original TV series.

This was a simple one-piece casting by Mini-Model Maddness, aka Larson Designs.  Although well-detailed for a model its size (4" in diameter), the resin was pock-marked with tiny air bubbles, which required the modeler to completely recoat the surface before finishing.

This model was built from an original issue.
