Clearly influenced by "Maria", the sinister humanoid robot from Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" (1927), C-3PO personified the Art Deco ethos of the 1930's sci-fi serials from which George Lucas drew much of his original inspiration. In 1999's "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" it was revealed that C3P0 was cobbled together by young Annakin Skywalker, although why an eight-year-old slave would have use for a protocol droid was never established. |
Somewhat out of scale, the C-3PO kit was one of the first generation of "Star Wars" models to be released by MPC. Like virtually all initial "Star Wars" merchandise, the kit first hit stores in 1978, more than six months after the film's May 25, 1977 release. Subsequent C-3PO kits were released in conjunction with the sequels "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) and "Return of the Jedi" (1983). This model was built from the first 1978 issue. |
