ABOUT THE DESIGN

ABOUT THE KIT

A key sequence in "Phantom Menace" revolved around an extraterrestrial "chariot race" involving "pod racers," vehicles composed of small air sleds pulled by twin jet engines.  Each vehicle in the race was unique.

The "hero" vehicle in this race was Anakin's Pod Racer, which featured a lifting body-like, open-air "pod" pulled by two engines that looked quite generic except for the twin forward-pointing vanes on each unit.  For a racer supposedly slapped together by an eight-hear-old slave boy, it was pretty damned sophisticated.

This kit had its good points and its bad points.  On one hand, the model was sufficiently large and highly detailed.  On the other hand, the big control cables didn't fit to the pod and engines very well, and the cockpit windscreen was a single sheet of clear plastic one had to bend and glue into position -- which is no mean feat.

Not a particularly attractive vehicle, the pod racer kit was not a good seller.

This model was built from an original issue.
